The 6th Global RCE Conference

The 6th Global RCE Conference was held in Kerkrade, the Netherlands from 20 to 23 November 2011.

Over 150 leading education and environment experts, including representatives from more than 50 Regional Centres of Expertise (RCEs) on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), UNDP and UNESCO, discussed education’s fundamental role in achieving a sustainable future worldwide. The conference focused on the need to provide people with better education on sustainability issues, in order to enable them create positive change in their own communities.

Under the thematic session on Higher Education, Professor Geoff Scott (University of Western Sydney) and Professor Daniella Tilbury (University of Gloucestershire and Severn RCE) presented their research study, titled ‘Turnaround Leadership for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Higher Education.

The Global RCE network being developed by the United Nations University comprises 88 RCEs worldwide, many of them led by universities. In all RCEs in the UK, namely East Midlands RCE, London RCE, North East RCE, Severn RCE, Wales RCE, and Yorkshire and Humberside RCE, universities play an active role.
