Southampton Blackout 2013: ‘pizza driven energy reduction’

SML-Soton-Blackout-SS-NEWThe second Blackout of the University of Southampton, the biggest switch-off and energy audit of this kind in UK higher education, took place on 26 April 2013.

Starting at 7pm, volunteers from staff and student community switched off non-essential lights and electrical equipment that had been left switched on before the weekend.

After the exercise, the participating campuses’ energy use over the 27-28 April weekend would be compared with that of a similar weekend in order to find the amount of energy saved. Last year’s inaugural Blackout saved over £1,600 and seven tonnes of carbon.

SML-Soton-Blackout-SK-pizza-NEWTweeting on 27 April, Simon Kemp, University Sustainability Action Chair, branded the exercise as ‘pizza driven energy reduction’, referring to the post-event pizza treat to the hungry volunteers who had survived a hard-night’s work.
