Dear Mr Secretary General,

The Covid pandemic, G7 in June, COP26 in November and the Earth is warming…

Belated congratulations, Mr António Guterres, as you assigned the role of the Secretary-General in 2017 but we kept quiet until now. This is our fourth alien letter; the other three written in the first quarter of 2016.

The reason is that the countries that signed the Paris Agreement in 2015 did not put enough effort into its success and we are silent with it. However, we kept on surveillance though invisibly throughout this period despite the world, which was facing the Covid-19 pandemic towards the latter part of 2019.

A Scottish newspaper The Daily Record carried an article, titled Glasgow named as top spot in Scotland for UFO sightings, with 25% of people in Glasgow had seen a UFO or had an alien experience. That made us realise that we are coming back on track yet again.

Glasgow is Scotland’s hotspot for UFO sightings or an alien experience while Norwich is the first with 31% and Birmingham and Newcastle are joint as second with 26%.

Glasgow is four months away from organising the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, or COP26. That is why we are spotted in the area, usually at night!

The uniting force of your world is that the 196 countries of signing the Paris Agreement in 2015. It was a historic moment to celebrate but then Mr Donald Trump became the president of the US in 2017. As you can see, he seems to be a climate denier and the only country that went out of the Agreement was the US at the end of 2020.

In November 2020 Mr Joe Biden won the presidency and the first thing that he took part in on his inauguration day of 20 January 2021 is joining back the Paris deal. That was a good move.

In the Paris Agreement, the goal is to minimise the rise in global temperature to well below 2C, preferably 1.5C, compared to pre-industrial levels. To achieve this goal, countries should minimise their carbon emissions in 5-year intervals and will achieve a climate-neutral world by the mid-century. The next one was COP26 in 2020 and it was postponed a year by the UK government due to the Covid pandemic.

After five years, the countries should submit the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to the COP26, now scheduled to be held in October-November 2021. But will that be enough – NDCs, I mean? Just think about it, please.

Although the G7 Summit in Cornwall in June 2021 was not one exclusively on climate change, we had our attention to the proceedings. Mr Joe Biden came to the UK in his first-ever visit as the president of the US, to meet Boris Johnson and the rest. The Guardian described it as a “make-or-break moment of climate crisis”. The leaders of the wealthiest countries should act now or they are going to be a “bunch of clowns” who failed to act in the last attempt to save your Planet Earth.

What did happen at G7? The leaders took action to phase out coal from homes as well as to stop financing coal overseas but that is the end of the story. The inability of the rich nations to offer support to the developing ones is a big question mark in the COP26. The amount of $100bn a year to grant the developing nations for climate support was not forthcoming although G7 leaders promised extra bilateral funding that fell short clearly.

Now G7 in Cornwall is over. The COP26 in Glasgow will be from 31 October to 12 November 2021. What G7 has given on the ensuing battle of climate change and COP26 is not enough.

There will be nearly four months to COP26. We must see what will happen in that time to your Planet Earth.

Thank you.

Orbitally yours
