Dear Mr Secretary-General,

Publishing the IPCC Report, Mr Sharma’s message and the view from space

Thank you for your reply but we kept quiet until Report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) came to light on 9 August. The release of this statement before the COP26 is a significant challenge.

Your description of the IPCC Report as “a code red for humanity” is worthy of applause. 

“The alarm bells are deafening,” you mentioned in a statement. “This report must sound a death knell for coal and fossil fuels before they destroy our planet.”

But who is to blame for the destruction of the only place you are in – the Planet Earth? THE HUMANS.

To Ms Greta Thunberg as well as other climate enthusiasts, the IPCC report 2021 did not contain real surprises.

Human beings benefit from coal, fossil fuels and any other that destroys your planet. Now the majority of them are aware of it and, for example, trying to make energy out of solar and wind, divesting from fossil fuels. Only a small minority would not accept that, saying that the climate has already changed and this is the change that is undergoing.

Yes. The climate in the past has changed over time and will change in the future. There is no question about that. But the changes to the climate since, say the 1990s is too much and another party is to blame. That happens to be “human beings.”

The Paris Agreement in 2015 contains as its goal “to limit global warming to well below 2” but introduces “preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius,” compared to pre-industrial levels.

The earth has warmed 1.1 to 1.3 degrees Celsius when compared to pre-industrial levels and the limit of 1.5 degrees Celsius is around the corner. However, the majority of the developing nations would like to stick to the 1.5C, not 2C that is mentioned in the Paris Agreement.

Five takeaways from the IPCC’s 2021 climate science report is published by Climate Home News on 9 August. They are the following:

• We are set to pass 1.5C warming by 2040
• Human activity is driving extreme weather
• We know more about regional climate impacts
• We are closer to irreversible tipping points
• Methane emissions are an important lever

Days before the IPCC Report is out, Alok Sharma, UK minister in charge of the COP26 to be held in November 2021 in Glasgow, said that we are on the brink of catastrophe and the COP26 is the last chance we have.

Whether he knew this or not, nobody is sure but the way climate change is progressing, he made an accurate guess. When the COP26 meets in less than three months, we can see the result.

Whether 196 countries agree with the Paris Agreement or 196 nations will not come into an agreement, so that our future will be in flames, thanks to climate change.

Mr Sharma was accused of travelling to 30 countries, including 6 Red nations, without quarantine. I think that is not fair. What Mr Sharma is doing is commendable and, looking at what he said recently, he is committed to combating climate change at the COP26 in November. 

By the way, now that the visitors from Red countries will travel with less quarantine only if they are coming to the COP26.

Having seen the wildfires in the US, Canada, Greece, Turkey, Italy, Algeria, and Siberia, NASA astronaut Megan McArthur says that fires over huge sections of Earth is saddening and climate change is to blame. The astronauts in the International Space Station (ISS) have the best image of Earth, as we do.
