Organised by the Centre for Environment and Society (CES) at the University of Essex, UK, the workshop is open to all, free of charge, and funded by the Impact Acceleration Account Active Engagement Fund.

The event aims to disseminate and enhance awareness of emerging climate change related to practice among wider stakeholder groups.

Four guest speakers from four countries – England, the US, Wales and Nigeria – will participate in the workshop.

Professor James Longhurst

(Assistant Vice-Chancellor, Environment & Sustainability, University of the West England, UWE, Bristol)

Theme: “Higher Education (HE): Challenges and opportunities of COVID 19 on climate emergency initiatives in general”

Professor Longhurst leads the sustainability agenda of the UWE, ensuring that sustainability considerations are present in the university’s teaching, research, campus operations and civic engagement work. His 35-year research career has focussed on air and carbon management and urban sustainability. He has produced over 225 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters and edited 24 books.  His career research and consultancy income exceed £14 million.

Professor Jane Davidson 

(Pro-Vice-Chancellor Emeritus at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David and former Welsh Governmentminister)

Theme: “HE (Higher Education): How it can implement in Wales”.

Dr Davidson is the author of #futuregen: Lessons from a Small Country, the story of why Wales was the first country in the world to introduce legislation to protect future generations. She is Pro Vice-Chancellor Emeritus at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. From 2000 – 2011, Jane was Minister for Education, then Minister for Environment, Sustainability in the Welsh Government.

Mr. Olumide IDOWU 

(Co-Founder/CEO, International Climate Change Development Initiative ICCDI, Nigeria, Africa)

Theme: “Industry: How it can implement in Nigeria; an emerging economy”

Olumide is a Nigerian climate change champion and the co-founder of the International Climate Change Development Initiative. He advocates for environmental consciousness and champions a balanced approach to development and environmental conservation. He is equally passionate about development. He has been actively involved in climate change advocacy for the last 12 years,

The speakers will join the discussion panel at the end and the viewers could ask questions from the panel.

Professor Kelum Jayasinghe (Director, CES) will direct the session together with Dr Chaminda Wijethilake (Seminar Organiser, CES). Asitha Jayawardena (Research Assistant) has engaged in organising the workshop.

The outcomes of the workshops will be disseminated to policymakers and the general public. The event will also create a convincing platform for researchers to actively engage with practitioners to establish new collaborations.
