The day one of COP28 marked positively. The long wait, i.e., 30 years of funding for the loss and damage by developing nations was over by the $100m funding by the UAE, the host nation. Germany with $100, the UK $76m (£60m), the US $17.5m and Japan $10m followed. The Loss and Damage Fund is growing now.
In the meantime, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Simon Stiell warned the negotiators and climate envoys, saying that humanity will bring about its own “terminal decline” if governments fail to trigger the end of the fossil fuel era at COP28.
How it will heed by the leaders in the coming two weeks, nobody knows.
